On the evening of October 22, 2019, the 16th Minigolf World Championships started in Zhouzhuang, also known as China's No.1 Water Town. From October 23 to 27, 236 sportsmen from 25 countries around the world had fierce competitions at Kunshan Invengo IOT Industry Park Co., Ltd. It is the first time the event has ever been held outside Europe. Li Hui, the Deputy Mayor of Kunshan City, attended the opening ceremony.
The world championships are authorized by the World Minigolf Federation (for short: WMF), jointly sponsored by Kunshan Bureau of Culture, Sports, Radio, Television and Tourism and the Zhouzhuang Town Government, undertaken by Kunshan Invengo IOT Industry Park Co., Ltd, and under the guidance of the Social Sports Instruction Center of General Administration of Sport of China and the Jiangsu Sports Bureau. There were four contest items in the event, individual strokeplay, individual match play, team strokeplay, and mixed pairs' strokeplay. The world championships were held at the internationally certified Zhouzhuang Invengo International Minigolf Course, and two courses, Concrete and Feltgolf, were employed both for the first time. Li Hui said in her speech that, she believes minigolf will win the favor of sports enthusiasts of Kunshan and even the entire China with the help of this event. Kunshan also will take the championships as the opportunity, strive for promoting the development of minigolf in Kunshan and the publicity of minigolf in China, while providing the event with quality assurance and thorough services, so as to construct a friendly exchange platform for people around the world to make friends with each other through minigolf.
Gerhard Zimmermann, the President of the World Minigolf Federation (WMF), said that, it is the first time the Minigolf World Championships ever landed in China, marking a significant stage in the development history of minigolf. The participation scale of this time reaches a record high, indicating that China has become one of the top countries in terms of international event. "Our goal is to establish an important minigolf federation in China, and implement national minigolf promotion activities", said the President.
Minigolf, born in America in early 20th century, with its wide coverage of audience, high degree of participation, and great interest, is a globally popular mass leisure sports. The World Minigolf Federation is the top management organization in the world in the field of minigolf, as well as a member of the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) and the Alliance of Independent Recognized Members of Sport (AIMS). Currently, it has 63 member countries, with over 30,000 registered professional athletes. Minigolf has also applied to be the official item of Olympic sports.
Before the opening ceremony, Li Hui met with the delegate led by Gerhard Zimmermann, the President of the World Minigolf Federation.
